All of the materials used in this podcast are the product of four decades of work and research by Presbyterians Protecting Life – www.ppl.org. This isn’t just a podcast for Presbyterians – all of our materials are useful for anyone with an interest in protecting human life at every stage from fertilization to natural death.
We’ll use both scientific and philosophical sources, and for our Christian listener, there will be plenty of grounding in Scripture and a Biblical worldview. The show notes in each episode contain links to articles and scripture references. With the average 15 minute podcast length, and the addition of the list of scriptures and articles, each episode can be used for older student and adult Sunday Schools, group studies and personal study.
Most of the weekly topics will be available in hard copy from the PPL.ORG website and will cover a variety of subjects. We’ll talk about what it means to be human and how everyone is human from the moment of fertilization, and that our time in the womb is only a stage of development like being an infant, a toddler, a child, an adolescent, a mature adult and, if we are blessed with a long life, becoming elderly and how all those categories are categories of personhood and deserving of life and human rights.

Welcome back to the ProLife Kitchen Table. My name is Deborah Holyfield, and before we catch up to what's happening to Baby Chris in the womb, I want to share an article from Life News that was written by Stephen Erthelt on July 18th, 2025, with the headline Shocking Report Shows Women Having Multiple Abortions, some killing 10 or more babies. A recent report from the Minnesota Department of Health has revealed a troubling trend in the state's abortion statistics, with some women undergoing multiple abortions, including a small number who have had 10 or more. The data, highlighted in a Substack article by ProLife journalist Sarah Turzo, underscores the scale of repeat abortions in Minnesota, raising concerns among pro-life advocates about the state's permissive abortion policies. According to the Minnesota Department of Health's 2022 report, 12,175 abortions were performed in the state, a 20% increase from the previous year. Terzo's analysis of the data revealed that among the 7,173 women who reported their abortion history, 2,791 had previously had one abortion. 1,080 had had two, 465 had three, 241 had four, and 128 had five. Shockingly, 159 women had 6 to 9 abortions, and 29 women reported having 10 or more. This is a tragedy Terzo wrote, emphasizing that the figures reflect not only the loss of unborn lives, but also the potential emotional and physical toll on women. Turzo continues, repeat abortions are not a new phenomenon. In a book collecting the stories of post-abortive women, one woman recalled that in her pre-abortion counseling end quote session, which consisted of an abortion worker giving a talk to a group of women, the worker told the group that she had had eight abortions. The worker seemed to be trying to convince the women that abortion was easy and simple. By claiming she had eight abortions and had no regrets, she minimized the abortion procedure and everything else these pregnant people would have to endure. It is, of course, possible the abortion worker was lying. Abortion clinic workers have been known to lie to pregnant women about fetal development and abortion risk in order to convince them to abort. But as the statistics above show, she may have been telling the truth. The post-abortive woman telling the story said that the abortion worker's admission made her feel, quote, really kind of dirty and sick because I didn't ever want to say that, end quote. But the counseling was successful. The pregnant woman went through with her abortion. Minnesota's abortion laws, which allow the procedure up to birth, have drawn sharp criticism from pro-life groups. A life news.com report noted that more than 12,000 babies were killed in 2022 alone, and a much higher number is expected in 2023. The state's policies, solidified under Governor Tim Waltz, have made Minnesota a destination for out-of-state women seeking abortions, with 1,986 non-residents undergoing the procedure in 2022. Kathy Blazer, co-executive director of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, described the state's approach as a land of truly unlimited abortion at the expense of women and children. Pro-life advocates argue that the high number of repeat abortions point to a lack of support for women facing crisis pregnancies. Restoring protection for innocent human life will require changing the way many Minnesotans think about abortion and about the lives of unborn babies and other vulnerable persons, Kathy Blazer said of its efforts to foster a pro-life culture through outreach and education. The group's Center for Pro-Life Minnesota aims to reach key communities with this message. The data has sparked renewed calls for legislative reform and increased support for alternatives to abortion, such as pregnancy resource centers. Pro-Life leaders hope to shift public perception and policy to prioritize both the lives of the unborn and the well-being of women, addressing the root causes that lead to repeat abortions. Before we take our break, I'd like to note the pervasive and naive beliefs among many, if not most Christians, is the idea that no one wants an abortion. One need only Google the search term shout your abortion to see dozens of women testify to their joy and relief because of their multiple abortions. At one of my Presbyterian's Protecting Life presentations at a large congregation in Oklahoma a few years ago, I was approached by an 85-year-old woman who related that she had had five pre-Row abortions at her husband's insistence. Christians and their churches and pastors need to wake up and stop confusing Christian compassion with enabling a pagan practice of child sacrifice. So now let's take a stretch break to clear our minds of some of the really sad stuff that we've heard so far and come back to hear about how, in his 19th week of development, baby Chris's five senses are preparing him to deal with the wider world.

SPEAKER_01:This week's 19 Baby Chris Devotional is titled The Tree in the Middle of the Garden. Hear the word of the Lord. What no eye has seen nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him. Thanks be to God. At nineteen weeks, Baby Chris is developing his five senses. Nerve cells for sense of taste, hearing, sight, smell, and touch. His sensory development is exploding and special areas for processing information about smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch are being created in his brain. His arms and legs are now in proportion to each other and the rest of his body. Among other things, this realignment of his limbs will serve to augment his five senses with a spatial sense that will enable him to better understand where his body is in relation to other objects. This sensory matrix will help him take in information about the world throughout his life. Our five senses are so important to us as human beings created in the image of God that Scripture teaches us to filter and guard the kind of information they communicate to our brains. One of the first songs taught to young children in church is Be careful little eyes.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, be careful, little eyes, watch your swing. Oh, be careful, little eyes, what's your swing? So be careful with the mouth watchers.
SPEAKER_01:And which misunderstanding, in turn, distorts our knowledge of God and God's will for our lives. Guarding our ears involves intentionally avoiding listening to gossip. Scripture is full of admonitions against gossip and warnings to guard our own words, and is tempting to point fingers at those who spread slander. But gossips can't spread slander without an audience, and our ears should be tuned to take in truth and not lies. The gospel is a word of truth intended to be heard. Romans 10 verse 19 says faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. At the end of a difficult saying or parable, Jesus often spoke of those who had ears to hear. Another way of saying, get rid of the distractions that interfere with your clear understanding and pay attention. Our sense of touch not only provides information about whether something is hard or soft, hot or cold, sharp or dull, but also allows for communication between two people involving touch, a caress, a hug, or a slap of rebuke. Pain is a blessing. It was a curse to lose one's sense of touch because of the nerve damage resulting from leprosy. Throughout his time on earth, people reached out to touch Jesus in hope of being healed or receiving some of his power. In turn, Jesus healed many with his touch. And perhaps the most famous touch of all was when the disciple Thomas confirmed his faith by touching Jesus' wounds. It's said that when one sense is compromised or eliminated, another sense becomes more acute to make up for the sensory deficit. Jacob tricked his father, blind Isaac, into believing he was his brother Esau by deceiving Isaac's sense of touch and smell by disguising himself. Sometimes two senses operate together. We have no sense of taste without an accompanying sense of smell. In worship, the Bible tells how God receives a prayer as a fragrant offering. In this week of fetal development, God integrates the physical world with the intellect by providing the portals for us to rightly understand the world and receive knowledge of God, the means to receive and confirm faith, the ability to connect meaningfully with other human beings, the ability to both injure and heal, and the system to receive warnings for self-protection. From this point on, for the rest of our lives, we will continually take in the knowledge of both good and evil, that dangerous knowledge that makes us most like God and the most in need of Jesus. Hear the word of the Lord. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_00:We hope you enjoyed this week's reflection. We encourage you to share it and join us next time on Pro Life Kitchen Table. May God bless you.
